Safety-First Battery Recycling

Lopez Solid Waste accepts many household batteries for free recycling! However, there are a few very important things you need to know before you bring your batteries to the dump:

1. Positive terminals must be covered! To reduce fire hazard on-site and during transport, positive terminals must be securely covered with non-conductive tape. You can also individually bag your batteries in plastic bags. These instructions come to us from The Battery Network, our battery recycling partner, who requires positive terminals be securely covered when accepting batteries for recycling.

   
   

2. We cannot accept damaged, defective, or recalled batteries. Batteries that are swollen, leaking, overheating, or punctured have to be handled by battery pros, and cannot be dropped off for recycling at the Lopez dump. (Corroded alkaline batteries are OK!) 3. We cannot accept e-bike batteries! These are handled by certified industry recycling programs — learn more here >

   
   

4. We can take many other kinds of rechargeable batteries, including cell phone batteries and cordless power tools!
