Donating at TIOLI

  • Bring clean, gently used, fully functioning, and seasonally appropriate reusable items to TIOLI on Saturdays and Mondays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • See a list below of items that cannot be donated at TIOLI.

  • Customers may donate up to two grocery bags of items plus one large item per donation day.

  • Do not leave items without staff approval. All donations must be inspected by staff before they can be left at TIOLI. Staff have the right to refuse any item for any reason, including seasonality, condition, limited inventory or storage space.

  • Disposal fees still apply to large items that may have to be thrown away, including upholstered furniture, mattresses, large appliances, and refrigerated appliances.

  • All items must be clean from debris, fluids, food, and mold; items that aren’t clean will be refused. All powered items must be functional at the time of donation.

  • If an item is refused, it is the donor's responsibility to take it home or pay to dispose of the item at Lopez Solid Waste. Please be respectful of all staff decisions.

How Best to “Leave It”

Take It Or Leave It is a cherished Lopez Island legacy, established by community member Neil Hansen — TIOLI was formerly known as "Neil's Mall." TIOLI is a shared community space for the free exchange of reusable items, and diverts thousands of pounds of items from the landfill each year.

In addition to the rules listed above, here are some ways that you can better support staff and volunteers when donating at TIOLI:

  • Bag up smaller items and collections of items. Labels help!

  • Make sure items have all their pieces and will be enjoyable for others.

  • If you have electronics, power tools, or small appliances that aren't fully functioning, you CANNOT leave them at TIOLI, but you may be able to recycle them for free!

    • Some electronics are considered eWaste and can be recycled for free — learn more

    • Broken power tools and appliances that are at least 50% steel can often be recycled.

  • Wrap sharp items for the safety of our staff and volunteers.

  • Make sure all plastic storage containers (i.e. Tupperwares) have matching lids.

TIOLI will accept a limited amount of large items as space permits, including windows, doors, exercise equipment, sinks, bathtubs, and metal furniture. Lopez Rocks and Lopez Island Buy Nothing groups are also great ways to exchange large items for free.

TIOLI does NOT accept:
  • Pillows or foam mattress pads.
  • Out-dated magazines or books, including encyclopedias, dictionaries, and manuals — these can go in mixed paper recycling.
  • Inflatable boats or rafts.
  • Inflatable mattresses.
  • Pet food or pet bedding.
  • Cordless telephones or proprietary electronics from DirectTV, Comcast, etc.
  • Plastic/vinyl window blinds or ceiling fans.
  • Disposable plastic cups, plates, or utensils.
  • Kitchen cabinets or particle board furniture.
  • Television or stereo cabinets.
  • Food (we suggest you donate to Lopez Food Share).
  • Health / Beauty products like cosmetics, hair care, personal hygiene, liquids, gels, lotions, etc.
  • Chemicals, powders, liquids, vanishes, solvents, etc.
