Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

For the safety of our team, our neighbors, and our environment, please review the information below before throwing hazardous materials away. 

 

How to Safely Dispose of Hazardous Materials​

  • Aerosols — Whether empty or spent, aerosol containers should not be included in regular household garbage. Safely store these and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Ammunition — Do not leave at the Lopez Dump! Deliver to the Sheriff's office.

  • Antifreeze/coolant — Uncontaminated antifreeze can be disposed of at Lopez Solid Waste for free during operating hours, as capacity allows. Limit 5 gallons per day. Empty containers cannot be recycled and must be paid for with regular household garbage.

  • Batteries — Review Lopez Solid Waste’s battery recycling guidelines here. Rechargeable batteries can also be disposed of for free at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Corrosives, degreasers, & cleaning products — Do not throw these away with your regular garbage — they pose a severe safety hazard to our staff, neighbors, and environment. Safely store these products and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Explosives & flares — Do not leave at the Lopez Dump! Deliver to the Sheriff's office.

  • Fluorescent light tubes & bulbs (spent) — Spent fluorescent light bulbs can be recycled at Lopez Solid Waste for free during operating hours, as capacity allows. Notify the kiosk attendant upon arrival & follow instructions. Do not throw these away with your regular garbage.

  • Gasoline, diesel, and other used fuels — Do not throw these away with your regular garbage — they pose a severe safety hazard to our staff, neighbors, and environment. Safely store these products and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Mercury — Do not throw this away with your regular garbage — it poses a severe safety hazard to our staff, neighbors, and environment. Safely store and dispose of it at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Motor oil — Uncontaminated motor oil can be disposed of at Lopez Solid Waste for free during operating hours, as capacity allows. Limit 5 gallons per day. Empty containers cannot be recycled and must be paid for with regular household garbage.

  • Paint & paint products — Household liquid paint and paint products that meet these PaintCare guidelines can be recycled at Lopez Solid Waste for free on Sundays only. See full list of accepted paint products before bringing them to the site. Empty paint containers and fully dried paints are not recyclable and must be included in your household garbage. Safely store excluded paints and similar products and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Pesticides, fungicides, & other poisons — Do not throw these away with your regular garbage — they pose a severe safety hazard to our staff, neighbors, and environment. Safely store these products and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Photo chemicals — Do not throw these away with your regular garbage — they pose a severe safety hazard to our staff, neighbors, and environment. Safely store these products and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Pool chemicals — Do not throw these away with your regular garbage — they pose a severe safety hazard to our staff, neighbors, and environment. Safely store these products and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Preservatives — Do not throw these away with your regular garbage — they pose a severe safety hazard to our staff, neighbors, and environment. Safely store these products and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Propane tanks (empty) — Empty propane tanks that are 10 gallons or less can be disposed of at Lopez Solid Waste during regular operating hours for a fee of $9.50 each. Propane tanks can be disposed of for free at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up.

  • Resins — Do not throw these away with your regular garbage — they pose a severe safety hazard to our staff, neighbors, and environment. Safely store these products and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up

  • Solvents & thinners — Do not throw these away with your regular garbage — they pose a severe safety hazard to our staff, neighbors, and environment. Safely store these products and dispose of them at an SJC Household Hazardous Waste Round-Up
