Construction &
Demolition Waste

Construction & demolition (C&D) debris accounts for a huge portion of the garbage brought to the Lopez Dump. To prioritize the safety of staff and customers, and to help our small facility manage increasing volumes of C&D waste, please review all of the information below before bringing large loads of C&D materials to the Dump.

Please follow these guidelines when disposing of construction and demolition debris/waste:

  • The Lopez Dump is not a transfer station or tipping floor — we are a drop-box facility with limited capacity. This means customers are responsible for ensuring that all of their waste goes into the appropriate containers on-site. If you are unsure which containers to use, ask a staff member or volunteer. Customers who leave garbage on the ground near containers could be subject to additional fees.

  • Truck and trailer loads are charged by volume and type of material:

    • $2.34 per cubic foot of common (compressable) garbage

    • $4.68 per cubic foot of high-density materials. High-density materials include items that cannot be easily compressed, like concrete, wet & hardened cement, stone, and brick. Mixed loads are reviewed by the kiosk attendant upon arrival.

  • Large sheets of plywood and full doors either 1) should be cut up into smaller pieces before you arrive on-site, or 2) if in good condition, should be easily removable from your load before dumping and set aside for reuse. TIOLI will not always accept plywood and doors for reuse — selection depends on the condition of the materials and space available at the facility.

  • Appliances, furniture, and fixtures may be recyclable (depending on what they're made of) or acceptable at TIOLI (depending on type, condition, and capacity) — please review our TIOLI donation guidelines. All appliances and upholstered furniture are still subject to disposal fees, even if TIOLI accepts them — review our full list of disposal fees. TIOLI does not have space for large appliances like dishwashers, fridges/freezers, or washers/driers — these appliances must be dropped across from the upper kiosk — notify the kiosk attendant and follow their instructions.

  • If possible, please call ahead if you're bringing a large load: 360-468-2555. This allows staff time to compress garbage in containers and make additional room for your load.

  • If you’re beginning a project that you expect will generate large volumes of waste, consider working with San Juan Sanitation to obtain a waste container for your work site. Learn more here
