(from Sandy Bishop)
Greetings everyone,
The Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District (LSWDD) Managing Board has determined that the appropriate rate to raise the needed $100,000 in property tax funding for the LSWDD in 2013 is 9.514 mils ($.09514 per $1000 of assessed valuation). The calculation was based on the latest information from the San Juan County Assessor that the total property valuation on Lopez for 2013 will show an approximate 6.8% DECREASE from the 2012 valuation. The 9.514 mil rate, when computed on the lower property values, will produce the same $100,000 that was presented to registered voters during our spring signature drive.
When approved by the County Council, the 9.514 mils will be the rate placed before voters in a ballot measure in the November 6 election. The Board took the action in a special meeting on July 18.
The $100,000 in property tax revenues will allow the new Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District to offer a garbage rate of $8.00/can, free disposal of self-separated recycling, an enhanced Take-It-Or-Leave-It, and other community-oriented services as we make our way toward the ultimate goal of Zero Waste.
The Board members are: Page Read, Chair; Sandy Bishop, Vice Chair; Larry Eppenbach, Secretary; Dan Post and Bruce Creps.
